The Accountability Guy®
There is a common misconception that goes around saying accountability is only essential in the business world. However, responsibility does not stop there. It also helps to harness the power of teamwork and goals in the world of sports and athletics.
A team that falls short of accountability will not be able to reach its goals. This is because players and athletes will often feel very demotivated and not put their best efforts into the game. Moreover, this team will also not have any proper teamwork or communication between themselves.
Therefore, proper accountability needs to be followed within a sports team to help ensure effective communication, honesty, and transparency. This article will walk you through 6 reasons to help you understand why accountability is important even in sports.
So, let’s get started, champ!

If you are a coach who manages a sports field, you should know that accountability is the most important key to keeping your athletes glued to each other.
Listed below are six reasons to understand the importance of accountability in the sports field.
By incorporating accountability within the team, you as the coach will also be instilling a feeling of ownership within the players. And the best way to do this is by setting a few team rules at the start of every game season.
During this meet, allow your players to put forth new rules. This way, they will feel more invested in the team and feel like they belong with the group.
The art of mastering a sport comes with a lot of hard work, patience, and tons of practice. However, there is a good chance of most players making mistakes now and then. In this situation, they might try to make up excuses on the spot to get out to trouble, especially if the other players make them feel guilty about it.
However, accountability helps create an excuse-free atmosphere where they are made to understand that mistakes are a part of the learning curve. Make the players feel comfortable and give them advice on how to play better on the field.
This way, they will start practicing harder and take responsibility for their mistakes instead of playing the blame game.
Moreover, you will also need to get the other players to help others to eliminate any personal vendetta. With this, you can be sure that your players will grow together as one.
One of the most important aspects of sports is to be on time, every time. Whether it is just a practice session or a live game, players need to get into the habit of time management to be more punctual.
Being late often gives a “me before the team” attitude, which is not very pleasing. Moreover, late players also tend to distract the other players, thereby delaying the overall progress.
On the other hand, players who show up to every practice or game on time (or even earlier) show them very invested in the sport. Moreover, it also sets the expectations for the rest of the teammates, which will make everyone else show up on time.
Whatever the sport is, there will always be a leader set above the rest of the teammates. Whether they arise naturally by building their reputation or are assigned as team captains, every sports team will have a leader who paves the way for the rest.
In fact, in most cases, team leaders play a more influential role inside the team than the coaches. Moreover, leaders will also have the power to set expectations for the next generation of aspiring athletes and even take them under their wing for training.
In addition to this, the leader will also have the freedom to call out on those who are not performing well and help them play better on the field.
Therefore, if you have a team leader within your sports group, make sure to equip them with right knowledge and mindset as this is who the other players will follow.
As previously mentioned, team leaders have great power over their team. And the best way to set an example is to hold themselves accountable for their wrongdoings and mistakes on the field.
Keep in mind that the position of leadership should not entitle them to special treatment. As the primary head of the team, it is your job to make sure that everyone, including the leader is responsible for their actions.
There is no doubt that instilling accountability within a team can be a Herculean task. However, over time, the players will automatically start to adapt to it.
It might start with just checking in with all the players to see their progress in the game. But it will soon extend beyond sports, as the players will be supportive of each other with their other interests.
Incorporating accountability indeed starts with the head of the team. However, it does not end there.
With any good team, the coach will hold the players accountable for their loss or victory. However, a great team will have the players holding other players responsible for the outcome.
So make sure to start including accountability to your gaming strategy today to get better results tomorrow.
